Borocade History
The tradition of brocade manufacture was prevalent in many centers in India such as Ahemadabad and Surat in the west. Paithan, Aurangabad, Raichur, Murshidabad, Delhi, Lucknow, Tanjore, Tiruchirapalli and Madras were other areas of Brocade production. Nevertheless Banaras brocades stand out as overwhelmingly towering both in style and execution. The word brocade is derived from the Latin word ‘Brochus’ denoting ‘to stab’ or to ‘transfix’. Brocade designs may be Tasvir or pictorial theme, Phulwar a floral design, Butidar, Geometrical Pattern, Shikargah or hunting scenes.
